I work in the women's movement, have two babies, a husband, and college degrees that I don't use (first world problems). I also have a fledgling freelance writing career that I'm too terrified to take full-time. I'm a little frozen by fear, making me a lot stuck in a life that is more template than art.
Still first world problems, I know. To come unstuck, (a la` Billy Pilgrim, Dog Woman), I've decided that a return to my roots is my only way forward. A return to creating, writing, and values, to find my home is where my heart is. "So here I am, in the middle way; home is where one starts from." I come from farmers and entrepreneurs; people who knew how to create from the earth and the hearth. Pictured are David and Alpharetta Harper, my maternal ancestors. They lived in a small cabin in Noble County that was accessible only on foot. Maybe they understood the reality that has frozen me: it's not easy to get home. One has to walk. |
